The UK government has placed an emphasis on local authorities setting a leading example on climate change. Action by local authorities will be critical to the achievement of the Government’s climate change objectives, such as the long term goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 in the Climate Change Act.

Since 1 October 2013 the Companies Act 2006 (Strategic Report and Directors’ Report) Regulations 2013 requires all UK quoted companies to report on their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their annual directors’ report. That requirement affects all UK incorporated companies listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange, a European Economic Area market or whose shares are dealing on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ.

The government has encouraged all companies, and other organisations who are not covered by the Act including local authorities, to report similarly and in June 2013 the Minister for Climate Change wrote to all Chief Executives of councils asking them to report GHG emissions from their own estates and operations (formerly NI185) following the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs guidance.  Erewash has supported this request by producing a Greenhouse Gas Emissions report which can be found below
