Counter Terrorism
Radicalisation is the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and extremist ideologies. If you are worried someone close to you is becoming radicalised act early and seek help. The sooner you reach out, the quicker the person you care about can be protected from being groomed and exploited by extremists.
CONTEST is the name of the UK's Counter-Terrorism Strategy. CONTEST is split into four work streams that are known within the counter-terrorism community as the "four P's":
Prevent
Safeguard people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism
Aim: Reduce intent
Pursue
Stop terrorist attaches happening in the UK and overseas
Aim: Reduce capability
Protect
Strengthen our protection against a terrorist attack in the UK or overseas
Aim: Reduce vulnerability
Prepare
Mitigate the impact of a terrorist incidents if it occurs
Aim: Reduce impact
The council mainly works with partners through the Prevent strand.
Prevent
The purpose of Prevent is to safeguard and support vulnerable people to stop them becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism of any form.
Prevent aims to:
• tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism
• safeguard and support those most at risk of radicalisation through early intervention, identifying them and offering support
• enable those who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate
Police forces across the country have specially trained officers who work with professionals in health, education, local authorities and charities, as well as faith and community groups to help vulnerable people move away from extremism. They are here to listen and offer help and advice. Receiving support is voluntary.
Anyone can make a referral, and they are received from a wide range of partners including communities, education, health, youth offending teams, police and children's social care. Members of the public can also refer into the police Prevent team.

Act Early…
Friends and family are best placed to spot the signs, so trust your instincts and share your concerns in confidence. They can help if you act early. You won't be wasting police time and you won’t ruin lives, but you might save them.
