How to pay your Council Tax

Council Tax bills are issued at the start of each financial year and are normally payable over 10 months. You can apply to pay your Council Tax by weekly, fortnightly or half-yearly instalments. You can request to pay over 12 instalments (April-March). Please contact us if you would like to pay over 12 instalments, rather than the statutory 10 instalments. 

We introduced "Better Ways To Pay" at PayPoint outlets and Post Offices. Details of this payment system is explained below.

Better Ways to Pay

Direct Debit

Direct Debit is a simple, safe and convenient way to pay your Council Tax bill, with almost 70% of Council Tax payers now opting to pay by this method.

Paying by Direct Debit will give you peace of mind as you are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee. It is very easy to set-up and means you will always be sure to pay the correct amount at the correct time. You also have the choice of three payment dates of the 1st, 15th or 25th of the month to cater for your personal financial situation.

You can set up a Direct Debit over the telephone by ringing 0115 907 1000. All you will need to do is provide us with the Council Tax account reference, the sort code, the bank account number and the names of the account holders.

Alternatively, you can complete the Direct Debit Instruction form below and send it through the post.

Debit or Credit Card by Telephone

You can pay by phone on our automated Card Payment Line: 0115 9072222. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is an additional surcharge of 1.65% for credit card payments.

Or you can ring our contact centre on 0115 9072244 and speak to one of our contact centre staff.

  • Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 5:00pm
  • Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Better ways to Pay

Although our safe and easy-to-use direct debit is the preferred method of payment for over 70% of our residents, the Council understands that some residents prefer to pay in person.

To make this easier for you and to help you beat the queues, your Council Tax bill will now feature a printed barcode so in addition to Direct Debit and the other existing methods of payment you can now pay your Council Tax anywhere you see a post office or paypoint sign

This offers our residents far greater choice and flexibility as most Paypoint outlets are open in the evenings and at weekends, whilst some Post Offices remain open on Saturday mornings.

How do I pay?

Simply present your barcoded bill at any Post Office or Paypoint outlet along with your payment. You can pay by cash at any PayPoint outlet and by cash, cheque or debit card at any Post Office.

If you have previously used a plastic payment card to pay at the Post Office please note that these cards are no longer valid. You can continue to pay at the Post Office as long as you present your barcoded bill along with your payment.

If you wish to arrange your own Standing Order please contact your bank. You must supply your reference number and the following details:

Over the Counter (by cash, cheque, debit or credit card)

The Council has two payment counters, one at the Town Hall, Ilkeston, and one at the Town Hall, Long Eaton. There is an additional surcharge of 1.65% for credit card payments.

Bring your bill along with your payment and it will be receipted.

Office hours are 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Fridays.

By Post

Please send only cheques and postal orders (made payable to Erewash Borough Council) to Resources Department, Finance Division, PO Box 2, Town Hall, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, DE7 5SE. 

Please write your reference number on the reverse of the cheque. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted. If you require a receipt you must send your bill with your payment.
