Ilkeston Charter FairWEBErewash residents still have time to give their views on a request by the Showmen’s Guild to extend Ilkeston Charter Fair by one day.

The fair currently runs from Wednesday tea-time through to Saturday night, but the Guild wants to see Sunday as the final day, opening between 1pm and 9pm.

A public consultation on the suggestion runs until 10am on Friday 15 February and Erewash Borough Council is urging anyone who hasn’t yet given their views to ensure they take part before the deadline.

A short survey can be filled in online while a paper copy of the survey is available at Ilkeston and Long Eaton town halls or can be requested by emailing colin.handley@erewash.gov.uk

The Fair’s Royal Charter, originally granted in 1252, means the council cannot decide to simply extend the event and must follow a legal process that requires the Home Secretary, currently Sajid Javid, to approve any change.

Councillor Gerri Hickton, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, says:

“We thank all those who have already shared their views with us but we are keen to encourage anyone who hasn’t yet taken part to do so before the consultation closes. This is an important request from the Showmen’s Guild and it is vital that residents let us know their thoughts – are you for or against Ilkeston Charter fair opening on Sunday?”

The results of the 12-week public consultation will be taken to a meeting of Council Executive for consideration before being sent to Full Council for approval or otherwise.
