Erewash Borough Council has accepted an invitation for the borough to be affiliated with 814 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) as part of its continued commitment to support the armed forces community.

Based at the Royal Navy Air Station at Culdrose in Cornwall, 814 NAS is a front-line anti-submarine squadron operating Merlin Mk2 helicopters from frigates, destroyers and from the new aircraft carriers.

The squadron – known as the ‘Flying Tigers’ – primarily protects the naval fleet from surface and underwater threats but also supports maritime security operations and helps in search-and-rescue missions.

At a meeting of Full Council last night (10th), members agreed to accept the affiliation invitation received last month from the First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin.

Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says:

“It is a great honour for us to accept this affiliation on behalf of the whole borough. As a council we value the work done by our armed forces personnel and we are delighted to be linked to the ‘Flying Tigers’ for the incredibly important role they play in keeping this country’s fleet and our shores safe.

“This affiliation is a further demonstration of our long-standing support for the armed forces community – we are proud to have signed up to the Derbyshire Armed Forces Covenant with other local authorities to pledge our support and guidance for serving personnel, veterans and their families.”

The full council meeting was held at Long Eaton Town Hall on Thursday 10 October.
