Eligibility
You can claim Housing Benefit if you live in supported or temporary accommodation, or if you are of Pension Credit age.
If you don't meet these criteria, you should claim Universal Credit for help with your rent.
Existing Claimants
If you are already receiving Housing Benefit, you won't be affected by Universal Credit unless your circumstances change.
Application Process
When making an online claim, you might not need to provide evidence initially, as some information can be checked internally.
If required, you must provide evidence within one month of making the claim. You can upload the requested evidence via your My Erewash account:
Complex Cases
For complex cases, original proofs may be needed. Complete the online form accurately even if you don't have all the evidence at hand.
Stopped Benefits
If your benefit was recently stopped, providing the necessary evidence within one month might allow your benefits to restart. Otherwise, you'll need to make a new claim or apply for Universal Credit.
Provide information to support a cancelled claim
Backdating Claims
You can request to backdate your benefit claim if you have a good reason. This can be done when completing your new claim or if a decision has already been made:
Confirmation
After submitting your claim, you'll receive a confirmation email. Further contact will be made if additional documents are needed.
