Extra Waste - What to do

Request an extra bin for larger households, children in nappies and for clinical waste.

Extra waste  

An extra black bin may be provided for households with more than six members, children in nappies and when clinical waste is being created.  

Larger families

Families with six or more permanent residents may apply for an extra 140 litre household waste black bin. Families of eight or more permanent residents may apply for an extra 240 litre black bin.

There is a charge for the supply and delivery of the bin (140 litre bin £41 and 240 litre bin £42). The bin remains the property of the Council.  

House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO)

A house of multiple occupancy is where five or more persons form two or more separate households and share basic amenities such as kitchen, bathroom or toilet. A HMO will be entitled to an additional bin only if there are 6 or more persons living in the property.  

There is a charge for the extra bin and proof of residency such as a tenancy agreement for each resident must be supplied.  

Properties with six or more permanent residents may request an extra 140 litre household waste black bin. Properties of eight or over permanent residents may request an extra 240 litre black bin.

Families with children in nappies  

If you have two children under the age of three in nappies you may qualify for an additional bin on a temporary basis until the eldest reaches three years old.

How to apply

You will need to provide proof of residency for each person living at the property.  

You can apply for an extra bin and upload your documents through your My Erewash account.  

Apply for an Extra Bin

Proof of residency we will accept:

  • Medical Cards  
  • Child benefit book or the child letter issued on an annual basis if the money is paid into a bank account  
  • Utility Bills  
  • Family Tax credit letter  
  • Full Birth Certificates (this must show the current address)  
  • Letter from School, Nursery, Hospital or Doctors Surgery  
  • Bank Statement  
  • Drivers Licence  
  • Benefits Letter.  

*Please note we do not accept passports  

Terms and conditions:

  • An additional bin will not be provided until proof of residency and payment for the supply and delivery of the bin (if required) has been received  
  • This bin remains the property of the Council
  • If your bin is lost or stolen you will be charged for a replacement
  • Please ensure you mark the bin for easy identification in case it is lost or stolen
  • We may write to you to review if the service is still required, in which case you may be asked to provide proof of residency again. Please submit documentation to ensure your service isn’t disrupted
  • Additional bin capacity will only be given whilst you have 6 or more residents in your property. The bin will be removed if this is no longer the case
  • If you have the temporary additional capacity for nappy waste, the bin will be removed once your eldest child reaches the age of three. Prior notice will not be given. If your child is still in nappies at the age of three, please get in touch to discuss a possible extension
  • If you no longer qualify for the service the bin will be removed
  • If you move address, you must take the extra bin with you and notify us as soon as possible to avoid disruption to your collection.
