Council Assets and Buildings
The council’s property holdings generate an estimated 208 tCO2e per annum. This is 12 per cent of the council’s gross annual greenhouse gases. To reach our net zero target these assets will need to be decarbonised.

To develop our approach to decarbonisation we will:
- Remodel how buildings and floor space is utilised
- Evaluate our energy efficiency
- Determine suitability for future purpose
- Implement energy efficiency measures
- Reduce council energy consumption.
Once energy consumption is reduced as much as possible, the council will investigate the potential for renewable energy generation on council land and buildings. This will help reduce emissions further and support growth of a clean energy network for Erewash.
One site we are currently investigating is at Merlin Way next to the council’s fleet depot.
- Various solar PV options will be assessed for this location to support the council’s services
- This will be combined with biodiversity improvements, and health & wellbeing benefits for staff and site visitors. As such this brownfield site will be transformed in service and aesthetics to best support our resilience to climate change.
Further sites will be evaluated and projects developed to benefit both the council and the local community.
Ideas and collaboration are encouraged
Housing Health & Energy Efficiency
As part of the national ambition to provide decarbonised, efficient and healthy homes, we have procured
E.ON Ltd. to provide home retrofit schemes and solar PV for local charities, using external funding. Many properties in the UK have low energy efficiency ratings. Erewash Borough Council is keen to facilitate retrofit projects where funding is available. This may be through council led schemes, advising community groups of funding options, or facilitating access to financial assistance for homeowners. See how to get involved.
Retrofitting our homes and business premises:
- Reduces energy loss
- Reduces our carbon footprint
- Saves on energy bills
- Reduces damp and mould problems
- Improves health and sleep
- Improves air flow
There are Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for landlords. Our housing team are working diligently to raise the performance of private rentals.
- Embedding these standards into all current and future housing development
- Providing guidance and advice to developers, householders, and landlords
- Enforcing compliance with statutory requirements
- Providing accredited home improvement options.
