Nature Restoration Opportunities & Nature Corridors
- To adapt meaningfully to the changing climate and its impacts we need to restore the natural habitat and biodiversity to our borough
- This includes linking up green spaces to enable plant and animal species to flourish and find refuge
- Erewash Borough Council will be assessing all our parks and wild places to see where restoration can be made to the benefit of nature and the community
- We will be liaising closely with the County Council as part of the Derbyshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
Tree Planting
- We have committed to planting 2,250 trees across Erewash
- Wherever possible tree planting will be encouraged to help absorb and slow flood waters, purify our air and provide pleasing spaces to live
- Our green space management will be integrating nature-based solutions wherever possible
- By allowing natural growth and variety this creates a healthier and more resilient green space that can withstand the challenges of climate change.

Reasons For Rewilding - 5 Reasons Rewilding Is So Important
A greener more biodiverse Erewash will provide:
- A natural cleaner environment
- More birds, bees and butterflies, plus squirrels, rabbits and other critters
- Better flood and drought resilience
- A pleasing visual amenity that reconnects us with nature
- Improved mental and physical health and wellbeing
We are keen to work with local communities to deliver green spaces we can all be proud of.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
As part of our planning responsibilities and the Environment Act 2021, we will be working with developers to provide at least 10% improvement to the natural habitat with each new project. This may be as part of the development itself, or in supporting borough nature restoration projects by buying biodiversity credits.
