Smoke Alarms

Information for Landlords about the Law on Smoke Alarms.

The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015

Landlords must have at least one smoke alarm installed on every storey of each rented property and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room containing a solid fuel burning appliance such as a coal fire, or wood-burning stove. Then the landlord must ensure each alarm works at the start of each new tenancy.

The regulations will be enforced by the council which can impose a fine of up to £5,000 where a landlord fails to comply with a remedial notice.
