Mayor joins VE Day pupils in war on litter

A mission by children as young as eight to say thank you to Britain’s wartime generation has seen them help build a patriotic VE Day garden at their school – while cleaning up the entire neighbourhood ahead of May’s 80th anniversary celebrations.

The flag-bedecked garden in Ilkeston is the work of junior school pupils who also set out armed with giant sacks to scour the surrounding area for discarded rubbish.

Erewash’s Mayor Cllr Kate Fennelly joined dozens of Year 4 youngsters to help fill the bags to the brim.
She also got to see the victory garden – which has been planted with spring bulbs – before the grateful borough council sent crews to cart away all the refuse.

Chaucer Junior School posted photos on its Facebook page as it paid tribute to the litter warriors for embracing a Keep Britain Tidy campaign called the Great British Spring Clean.

A message from teachers read: “They have done a brilliant job in making their community a better, cleaner place to live and should be so proud of themselves.

“We would like to thank Erewash Mayor Kate Fennelly for coming to help us and Erewash Borough Council for providing us with all the equipment and collecting our rubbish for us afterwards. Massive Well Done everyone! Mrs Wheatley, Miss Stallard & Mr Higgins.”

VE Day – marking 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe – is on Thursday 8 May. Four days of national celebrations including street parties across Erewash will start on Monday 5 May, which is a bank holiday.
