CCTV

The Council operates a CCTV scheme across the district to help:

• reduce the fear of crime
• deter and prevent crime
• improve the safety and security of residents, visitors and the businesses
• assist in the maintenance of public order and reduce offences involving vandalism and nuisance
• provide high quality evidence which may assist in the detection of crime and the apprehension and prosecution of offenders
• protect property
• provide assistance with civil claims
• provide assistance with issues relating to public safety and health
• provide assistance and reassurance to the public in emergency situations

The system consists of static and fully functional (pan, tilt and zoom) cameras and either a fibre optic or other transmission system which sends pictures to the control, monitoring and recording facility.

How long are images kept for?

Images that are not required for evidence are not kept and will normally be deleted after 31 days. Images from all cameras are recorded 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Requesting footage

You have the right to get a copy of the information that is held about you. This is known as a subject access request (SAR). This right of subject access means that you can make a request under the Data Protection Act to any organisation processing personal data.

You can only request to view footage of yourself, and not of your car, property or anyone else.

Camera Locations

The locations of CCTV cameras in Erewash are listed below. Each of the following council buildings also has a number of public facing CCTV cameras on a system that is monitored and managed within each of the buildings:

• Civic Centre, Long Eaton
• Ilkeston Town Hall
• West Park Nursery, Long Eaton
• Merlin House, Merlin Way, Ilkeston
• Erewash Museum, Ilkeston

The council also uses CCTV cameras on its refuse vehicles, as well as body worn cameras for Neighbourhood Wardens and has a rapid deployment CCTV system.

If you witness a crime or incident that you believe was captured on one of the CCTV cameras, please phone 999 if the incident is taking place at the time or phone 101 to report it on the non-emergency police contact number.

Under the Data Protection Act, you have the right to request footage of yourself that has been captured on the CCTV cameras. If you wish to make a request for this footage, this is known as a Subject Access Request and there is certain information that you are required to provide in writing.
