Abbie Breakwell in action at ParisAn annual “Oscars” event to salute local heroes who get residents involved in sport and other kinds of physical activity will again be held in Erewash – and the council is inviting people to nominate who should win.

The Active Lives in Erewash Awards have previously seen the likes of Paralympian  Abbie Breakwell honoured. The inspirational wheelchair tennis ace, 21 – who competed at the Paris Games – is from Long Eaton.

The 2025 awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 23 January at the New Manor Ground – home of Ilkeston Town FC. People have until Sunday 1 December to suggest nominations in eight categories.

These include the Special Recognition Award – which Abbie scooped in 2022.

The others are: Active Leader Award, Active Volunteer Award, Active Participant, Active Young Person Award, Active Group Award, Legacy Leisure Adversity Award and Active Project Award.
