Shoppers in Erewash who struggle to balance their budgets can get £10 of groceries for free – while learning how to grab the best supermarket bargains.

The offer is open to residents aged 19 and over who are not savvy at sums so face being lured into spending too much.

Easy-to-follow tips on calculating how to save money will be shared by experts. All those who complete the session will get a £10 shopping voucher.

The free “Supermarket Sweep” event on Tuesday 19 November is being run by the organisation Direct Help and Advice, which has teamed up with Erewash Voluntary Action, YMCA Derbyshire and Skills for Life.

It is being held at the Erewash Voluntary Action hub in Long Eaton’s Granville Avenue. The workshop – from 10am to 12.30pm – is open to local people who do not have Level 2 maths (GCSE level 4).

A spokesperson for Erewash Voluntary Action – an organisation praised by Erewash Borough Council for its work in the community – said: “If you are shopping on a budget learn how to be a savvy supermarket shopper.

“Don’t fall foul of the supermarket sales pitch. Take our ‘downshift challenge’ – which includes learning how to plan meals and dodge impulse buys.”

A poster plugging the event says refreshments will be available – and adds: “Need a SIM card? Please ask us about this.”

Councillor Josy Hare, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:

“The cost of living is particularly harsh on those in the community who find it tough navigating the blizzard of offers they face in supermarket aisles. But by learning a few tips they can find out how to make real savings.”
