The event – based on Ruth Lauren's book Tourmaline and the Museum of Marvels – runs from Wednesday 19 February to Saturday 22. The story is about a sassy young heroine with wondrous powers.

The popular heritage and culture hub in Ilkeston is one of more than 55 museums across the country taking part in a campaign to get even more youngsters visiting them.

It is being run by the charity Kids in Museums, which has teamed up with publisher Little Tiger to run the book event – where youngsters can pick up a free activity sheet.

A blurb for the treasure trail reads: “Tourmaline’s strange new magical powers are causing chaos and she desperately wants to know how to control them. When she receives a mysterious postcard promising her answers, she sets off on an unforgettable adventure to the Museum of Marvels.

“Search for Tourmaline, her friends and an assortment of magical objects hiding in the museum. Complete the spotter trail and get a free Tourmaline sticker!”

Families can also take part in a national competition to win a signed Tourmaline book bundle and a National Art Pass (Plus Kids), kindly donated by Art Fund.

Entrants are invited to design their own Museum of Marvels and to share the drawing on BlueSky or Instagram with the hashtag #TourmalineTrail and tag Kids in Museums and Little Tiger.

Erewash council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Becca Everett, who is Lead Member for Community Engagement, said:

“The award-winning Erewash Museum is already a big favourite with local children and this fun trail aims to get even more youngsters visiting during half-term.”

The usual opening hours for the museum near Ilkeston Market Place are 11am to 4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Entry is free and refreshments are available at its Dalby House Café.
