Recovery efforts

In October 2023 many residents and business owners had to deal with flooding caused by Storm Babet. We understand that many people will still be coming to terms with the impact. Whilst Derbyshire County Council is the Lead Flood Authority, Erewash Borough Council has worked with partners to support the community, these included;

  • Free bulky waste removal for household goods damaged by floodwater.

  • Financial assistance programs, including council tax discounts.

  • Housing and Legal Advice.

Getting prepared

We understand the concerns you may have about potential flooding as Autumn and Winter bring more rainfall. Here's a summary of work undertaken by all partners since October 2023:

  • Property Flood Resilience Repair Grant Scheme: More than 600 grant applications were received by Derbyshire County Council for this grant, which is designed to support flood resilience work to individual properties.

  • Flooding Investigation Report: A report on the flooding across Derbyshire that resulted from Storm Babet will be published by Derbyshire County Council. We contributed by reporting on the issues that we experienced within Erewash.

  • Multi-Agency Flood and Drainage: Regular meetings of the Flooding Subgroup are held with partners to address drainage-related flooding issues.

  • Riparian Ownership Advice: If you own land alongside a watercourse, you are a “riparian owner”. Derbyshire County Council offers advice on this subject at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/environment/flooding/responsibilities/riparian/riparian-ownership-rights-and-responsibilities.
  • Flood Warden Training:  If you are interested in being a volunteer flood warden there are training opportunities provided by the County Council. If you are interested in Flood Warden training, please contact the flood team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

  • Improved Flood Information: The “Derbyshire Prepared” website is being enhanced for flood preparedness, visit Home | Derbyshire Local Resilience Forum (derbyshireprepared.org.uk)

  • Sandbag Collection Points: Erewash Borough Council will endeavour to issue filled sandbags to residents during a flooding incident. A supply of 10 sandbags (empty) can be collected free of charge from Ilkeston or Long Eaton Town Hall receptions during opening hours.
