The Local Plan and Planning Policy
The local plan provides a clear framework enabling the council to plan for where, how much, and what type of development occurs around Erewash over a long-term period. Guided by the national planning system, the Core Strategy plays an important role in securing improved environmental, social, and economic conditions across Erewash. Local Plan policies encourage the sustainability of new development, ensuring it makes a positive contribution to wherever the Borough proposals are located. This also sets guidelines to consider whether planning proposals (as set out within planning applications) should be approved.
As these pages suggest, the responsibilities of planning policy are broad and varied. However, the section’s key objectives are to produce work that:
- Manages the delivery of new homes and jobs to drive economic growth;
- Identifies the key necessary infrastructure to ensure strong and connected neighbourhoods; and
- Positively manage Erewash’s historic and natural environment to ensure the Borough’s assets are protected for future generations to enjoy.
- The section also undertakes monitoring activities that allow the Borough Council to understand the impact its land-use planning policies have on economic, social, and environmental objectives.

Erewash Core Strategy 2014
The Erewash Core Strategy provides the Council with a strategic spatial planning framework through its inclusion of policies that address new housing and regeneration, economic development, our town and local centers, green belt protection, green infrastructure, climate change, and the positive management of our built and natural environment.
Since 2004, when the production of a local plan became compulsory for local planning authorities, Erewash has regularly added to (and periodically updated) its suite of local plan documents. This has helped ensure the timely availability of planning policy and useful guidance that spans a wide range of matters, enabling the Council to be clear on its approach to the development and use of land within the Borough. Recent changes to planning legislation now, however, require the Council to review the strategic policies within its local plan every five years to ensure they continue to conform with planning guidance and the government’s main planning priorities.
The local plan contains a number of development plan documents (DPDs), some of which the council is legally required to produce while others are optional. Each element of the Erewash Local Plan can be accessed from this page, with other important background information also made available to help clearly explain the role and purpose of each document.
